White sand dunes stretching to the horizon, turquoise lagoons appearing between them after the rains, and almost no one there to see it. Lençóis Maranhenses is one of the most extraordinary landscapes in South America — and it remains almost unknown outside Brazil.
This guide covers everything: when to go, what to see, how to get there, and where to stay if you want to experience it properly rather than in a day trip from São Luís.
What is Lençóis Maranhenses National Park?
Lençóis Maranhenses National Park covers 155,000 hectares in the state of Maranhão, in northeastern Brazil. The name translates loosely as "sheets" — the dunes from above resemble white sheets spread across the landscape. The park is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Rio Preguiças to the east.
The dunes themselves are permanent. The lagoons are seasonal — they form between the dunes during and immediately after the rainy season (January–June), when rainwater collects in the valleys and cannot drain through the sand. The result: between June and September, the park becomes a surreal landscape of white sand and crystal-blue water, extending as far as you can see.
The lagoons are freshwater. They appear turquoise because of the fine white sand beneath them. The clarity is extraordinary — you can see bottom at 3–4 metres. The temperature, warmed by the sand, is perfect for swimming.
Best time to visit Lençóis Maranhenses
June–September — peak season for lagoons
This is when the lagoons are fullest and the landscape is at its most spectacular. The water is clear and warm, the dunes are bright white, and the contrast is at its sharpest. July is the ideal month — the lagoons are fully filled, the rains have stopped, and the visibility is excellent.
October–December — transition season
The lagoons gradually diminish. Some areas retain water well into November. The landscape is less dramatic but the crowds are thinner and the prices lower.
January–May — rainy season
The lagoons are forming. The dunes are darker, heavy with moisture. The park is not at its best for visitors but is fascinating in its own way. Access can be difficult after heavy rain.
How to get to Lençóis Maranhenses — from São Luís and beyond
The easy way — São Luís
Fly to São Luís (SLZ), the capital of Maranhão, from São Paulo, Rio, Brasília or Fortaleza. From São Luís, it is approximately 280km to Barreirinhas (the main gateway town), via a road that is mostly paved. The drive takes 3.5–4 hours, or there is a small regional airport at Barreirinhas with connections via São Luís.
The most scenic way — Rio Preguiças by boat
From Barreirinhas, you can take a riverboat up the Rio Preguiças to reach the park from the east. The river journey itself — mangroves, pink dolphins, fishing villages, the occasional sand bar — is part of the experience. Our partner resort sits directly on the river 2km from Barreirinhas, and the boat is the most direct way to arrive.
Where to stay in Lençóis Maranhenses — Barreirinhas and the Rio Preguiças
Most visitors stay in Barreirinhas or São Luís and make day trips into the park. This is the least satisfying way to experience Lençóis Maranhenses. A day trip gives you a few hours on the dunes; staying on the Rio Preguiças gives you evenings watching the sun set over the water, mornings in the mist before the crowds arrive, and the slow rhythm of the landscape rather than its highlight reel.
Our partner resort — exclusive eco-resort on the Rio Preguiças
Our partner property is the only exclusive eco-resort on the banks of the Rio Preguiças, 2km from Barreirinhas and 200,000m² of lush grounds. It is certified by the UN Bright Green Book as one of the 500 most sustainable enterprises in the world. Zero effluents are returned to the river.
The resort features a legendary sand-bottom swimming pool (unique in the region), individual chalets ranging from 58m² to 100m², and a kayak fleet for exploring the river. Breakfast is included. The spa is excellent for recovery after a long day on the dunes.
What to do in Lençóis Maranhenses — lagoons, river and dunes
The classic walk — Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita
The two most famous lagoons, reached by jeep from Barreirinhas and then on foot across the dunes. The walk between them takes 20–40 minutes depending on the route, through deep soft sand. Start early to beat the heat and the groups.
Rio Preguiças by boat
A full-day or half-day journey upriver from Barreirinhas. The river passes through mangroves, past fishing villages, and eventually reaches the mouth where the river meets the sea at a beach called Atins or Caburé. Dolphins are regular companions. The return journey as the light changes in the afternoon is extraordinary.
Sunset on the dunes
Go to any of the accessible dune areas in the late afternoon and walk uphill. Sunset over the lagoons, with the last light catching the water, is one of the finest things you will see in South America.
Lençóis Maranhenses practical travel tips
- Footwear: Flip-flops for the lagoons, walking shoes for the dunes. The sand reaches 60°C in the afternoon — barefoot is not recommended between 11am and 4pm.
- Sun protection: The dunes amplify UV radiation. 50+ SPF, hat, sunglasses. This is not optional.
- Water: Carry more than you think you need. The heat is intense and the distances deceptive.
- Cash: Barreirinhas has ATMs but they run out. Bring cash from São Luís.
- Guides: Independent entry to the park requires a local guide. This is a legal requirement, not a tourist tax — the guides are generally excellent and the requirement protects the environment.
